Lars Nybo says:Very nice article and analysis of the distance running records. However, still remarkable that while sub 13 min for 5 K and sub 27 min for the 10 K were rare (not possible) prior to the EPO-era it appears that such performances are (if not every day events) then acheived every year by several athletes in events that include a paid pacer. One may hope that this is due to improved training and technical development (shoes – tracks), but difficult to quantify if this may account for the general improvement in running performances compared to e.g. 1990.

Thomas Raddatz says:I agree with them. But the times in marathon decressing massivly in this decade. Why this?
Till 1998 no man runs faster than 2:06h.
Till 2003 no man runs faster than 2:05h.
Now the top 20 mens ever run faster than 2:05 and all did it since 2008.
Are all the good kenians and ethopians run marathon.
The fastest 50 marathoners ever are all kenians or ethopians, except 3 marrocans.
